SUMMER ACADEMY “PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN EUROPE WITH EMPHASIS ON THE RIGHTS OF REFUGEES”

The UNESCO Chair of “Intercultural Policy for Active Citizenship and Solidarity” is organizing a summer academy in Thessaloniki for lawyers, judges, educators, police officers, social workers, NGOs and international scholars, law students and international students. “Protection of Human Rights In Europe with a particular emphasis on the rights of refugees”.

The courses will be taught in English by 11 specialized academics from Europe and Greece at the University of Macedonia’s air-conditioned Conference Room from July 5th to July 9th , 2017. The program lasts for 40 hours and offers 3 extracurricular ECTS to participants.

Classes are daily from 15.00 to 21.45, on Saturday from 10.30 to 18.30 and on Sunday from 15.00 to 21.45.

The Summer Academy consists of five thematic circles and corresponding lectures, which are:

International and Regional Mechanisms for the Protection of Human Rights

  1. Naskou Perraki: “International and Regional Human Rights Protection: The Example of Refugees”

The European Convention on Human Rights

  1. Rajska: “The European Convention on Human Rights – The Right to Fair Trial and the Right to Asylum”
  2. Papadopoulos: “Freedom of expression”

Fundamental Human Rights in the EU and the Protection of Personal Data

  1. Papadopoulou: “The Charter of Fundamental Rights”
  2. Alexandropoulou: “The Protection of Personal Data in the EU”

Prohibition of Discrimination with Emphasis on LGBT Rights

  1. Anagnostopoulou: “The legislation and case law of the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Justice on Prohibition of Discrimination”
  2. Tryfonidou: “LGBT Rights in Europe”

Refugees, Minorities, Groups, Cultural Rights

  1. Baxevanis, “The Asylum Procedure for the Greek Asylum Service”
  2. Koutsouraki “The Common European Asylum System”
  3. Gaitenidis: “Cultural Rights in Europe” and “Minorities, Indigenous Peoples and Groups: Human Rights and Identity”
  4. Papavassiliou – Alexiou: Workshop on “Intercultural Skills for Counseling in Vulnerable Social Groups”.

Mr. Petros Mastakas, UNHCR Staff Member in Athens, will deliver a lecture.

 

The tuition fee is € 250 until May 25, 2017, and later the fee is € 280. Especially for university students, the cost is only € 190 until May 25 and then the costs is € 240. The cost includes: tuition, coffee breaks and light meals. There is also an optional program with various social and cultural activities.

There are special discounts of 10% on tuition for 2 people and 20% for 3 people. Credit card payment is available in 2 interest-free installments.

The summer academy will award two scholarships provided that at least 20 participants are registered and candidates will show great academic interest and performance, as well as proof of their financial inability. The scholarship covers only the cost of participation.
